Mon, 12 February 2007 ![]() Welcome to the first NBT podcast of 2007. Highlighting totally new artists, we continue our Music Tourism and Sonic Adventures, fighting apathy wherever we may find it in the Independent Music Scene.
We start with the vibrant RnB of Audra, slide into the Electro-clash of Pale Obsession and bump into the giddy Power Pop of Ashley Wool.
We discover thoughtful Folk with Alun Parry swerving up and around Porcupine by Joy Missile and burn bright with Four Star Riot.
There is something in the air at the lost and found bar with Lauren Fincham and we get breathless with Ella-X, sinking into dreams with Aileen Paron.
Our mood swings dark and light with The Histrioniks and Bloom give us a shoulder to cry on.
Catch all these bands on the www.nextbigthing.co.za website, look further and support these bands by buying their amazing cds from their websites. While the established artists and the major music companies sink ever deeper into boredom and backslapping apathy (the grammys anyone?), those of us with a sense of adventure travel the indie highways and constantly get provoked, surprised and astounded.

After some hiccups, we are back and sailing ever forward. All the tracks on the show can be found on the www.nextbigthing.co.za website.A bit about some of the bands: Annie Minogue is a powerhouse vocalist whose smartly- crafted modern rock songwriting and searingly emotional performances stand out in the crowded field of female rock singers. -Dimitri Ehrlich, author of Inside the Music Annie is the former lead vocalist for SPV Recording Artist, Ghost Of A God, with whom she toured America and Europe. GOAG's 1998 album has earned extensive radio-play on 150 U.S. college stations, and throughout Europe. This album was produced by Leif Mases, who is credited for having worked with Led Zeppelin and Jeff Beck. The album was also recently released in Japan on the Nippon Crown label. Annie's latest recordings were mixed by Peter Moshay (Mariah Carey, Hall & Oates and Jennifer Lopez) and mastered by George Marino (Joan Osborne, The Black Crowes, Led Zeppelin and Guns N Roses). Dandelion Wine are ethereal female vocals with a mix of medieval and world instruments (dulcimer, flute, lute etc) and electronic beats, bass and swirly electric guitars. While Rob Costlow has come a long way since those lessons and from his native Indianapolis, his love for creating original compositions is still at the heart of his contemporary solo piano music. His compositions are inspired by love of his family, including his wife Melissa. Travels throughout the United States, Canada, Italy, Mexico, and the Caribbean also provide inspiration. bill was formed in the fall of 2003 when band members and long time friends Curtis Hartling (guitar, vocals, drums), Jonathan Coyle (drums, vocals, keys, guitars) and Dave Marciano (bass, sax, vocals) wanted to do something new in San Diego. Frustrated with seeing bands that were more image than talent, bill draws on years of formal music training and various pop/rock influences to make music that is catchy but challenging. bill has been playing shows since January, and making waves in San Diego since. Their entertaining live show includes a huge catalogue of originals, jaw-dropping covers (including a dead-on version of Heart's Barracuda, yes, even the vocals) and frequently switching instruments and roles. They were invited to appear on the Fox morning show to promote Karl Strauss's first Beach to Brewery music fest (which they headlined along with San Diego Buzz Bands 'Campaign for Quiet', 'the Dragons' and 'Tubby'). They also won a spot on this year's Pacific Beach Block Party by unanimously upsetting the house favorite (and venue sponsored) at the Longboard Grill Open Mic competition. Message from Russ (the producer of 'The Acoustic Comp'): 'I started this compilation with a 'punk goes acoustic' mentality, but I wanted to include some emo, indie, and whatever else I thought fit the style of the local scene. I recorded all of the music at my home studio in Humboldt because it was the only way to guarantee that the material on the cd would be unique, new, and having an element of spontinaity. I even made the one non-local artist drive all the way from San Francisco to record here. 'The instructions I gave to the bands as we recorded was to just play, not to worry about making it perfect or anything, just to play the songs with a good vibe. You can seriously FEEL the difference between these songs and the overproduced jingles on TV and Radio. There are tons of mistakes on this comp., and that is what I like best about it. 'It has been a ton of fun having some of my favorite local bands come over to my house and do acoustic renditions of some of their newest material. It's amazing how great this has turned out, the local bands have really been into this whole idea and I just wanna thank them for making this possible. The bands Nobody's Star and elk river etiquette are on this compilation. catch more of this amazing comp here http://myspace.com/theacousticcomp Mike Kondol tells us Before alternative was a genre, record people usually wrote me back saying my songs sounded avante garde so I began using the name Avandguard.Currently,Seattle producer Jack Endino mastered my lastest cd 'Cartoon Hearts' It has elements of folk, indie and rock. A DJ in South Africa on a show called The Next Big Thing said 'Cartoon Hearts' sounds abit Dylanesque. I'll take that. All thes bands and more can be found on the Top Ten Highly Recommended (can be found by clicking on top ten on www.nextbigthing.co.za under the spotted dog ha ha ) Comments[2] |
Fri, 17 June 2005 And so it's the three of them again. World wide madness, soundbites galore, the three, Martin.de , Martin.za and Dave (who is just Dave) discuss music, mullets, trends and of course the fine art of the perfect pop song.
We want you the listener to tell us your fave tunes on www.nextbigthing.co.za and we will play them, a kinda Peoples Choice Awards for indie radio! So if u have a track you want heard, mail me at info@nextbigthing.co.za and we will have a radical show two weeks down the line! Some info on some of the bands featured on tonight's show Avandguard says about his new cd, 'Joe Henry, Elliot Smith, Robert Pollard and Alejandro Escovedo are some of the artists I've admired over the years. As a kid, my guitar teacher suggested I learn the guitar parts off 'Blow by Blow ' by Jeff Beck and 'Super Sessions' by Mike Bloomfield, Steve Stills and Al Kooper. 'Cartoon Hearts' has tried to pay a little homage to the artists I have copied from over the years. David W Solomons tells us a little about his song featured on the cast, Lazy Guitar This basso ostinato is one that I have used so often that I cannot count the versions. It all started with a setting I made of a verse from Isaiah back in the mid 1970s! But this impro is very introspective and completely devoid of theology, philosophy or anything else to disturb the relaxing spirit. Besides his fantastic set of pipes, there is another reason Xisco Ponce Jr's music sounds so wonderful, he manages to put together a stellar cast of music biz pros to help his cause, along with the help of producer Barry Coffing (gold record for hit single 'How Do You Talk to an Angel'). On guitars there is Larry Treadwell (Thomas Dolby), Deon Estus plays bass (George Michael, Elton John), Valerie Davis makes the background vocals (Celine Dion, Whitney Houston, Toni Braxton) something special, and Sammy Tormanen mans the drums (Transistor)…an impressive group of performers Heather Leona was nominated as Best Scout/Feature Writer in the '2005 International Online Music Awards', hosted by International Online Music Magazine. She tells us about the writing and recording of her songs with her husband Brian Ross, 'We would sit together at night, after our daughters, Kenndra Kay and Angel, went to sleep and he would come up with a tune, and we would run with it. We began writing the lyrics together. After we had four songs written, we decided to record them in the studio. He said he had all of the instruments parts in his head, and he wanted to know if it would all sound as good as what he could hear in his own head. We began recording, and it was the experience was incredible!! All of the songs just flowed. We couldn’t believe how different a song can sound when all of the instruments blended and complimented one another' The name Mongoloidian Glow is a reference to the pure & relaxed shine on the faces of those who experience true innocence. Listen to the music of Mongoloidian Glow and when you're done dancing and done laughing and done crying, you'll be standing smack dab in the middle of yourself with the look on your face of a warm Mongoloidian Glow this weeks Top Ten Highly Recommended (can be found by clicking on 'top ten' on www.nextbigthing.co.za under the spotted dog ha ha ) 1 Cartoon Hearts - Avandguard 2 Never Known - O Doyle Rules 3 Snapshot - Dream Aria 4 Planet/Lazy Guitar - David W Solomons 5 Sifting Through Psychos - Sheena Morris 6 Love At First Sight - Heather Leona 7 Joleen Hemple - Mongoloidian Glow 8 City Of Love - Xisco Ponce Jr 9 Out Of Your Light - Boulevard 10 If I - Iridium Crucible Comments[1] |

Thu, 28 April 2005 Here is show number 3, a little too much beer and some interesting music! Show notes to be updated by Martin (Germany) soon. We have included a picture of traveling that relates to the show. Notes on just a few of the bands featured on the show Falik is Charlie and Cheryl Pecot. Founding member, Charlie, originally from Los Angeles California, has been playing music since before he even knew how old he was. Which was a long time ago, because he's really old now. He's been in more bands than he can remember as both a bassist and guitarist. There aren't too many genres or formats he hasn't played in. He's played with Jon "Bermuda" Schwartz ("Weird" Al Yankovich long time drummer) and Jeremiah Soto (of Solace), and the Los Angeles Philharmonic (when in High School). One of the more "famous" bands he's been in was "Cast of Thousands" in the early '90s. (Of course the thing they were most noted for was the flyering job they did on a Santa Monica overpass, but I digress. He was actually in a bar with Robert Plant just before the singer about to do alarge show in Los Angeles. Mr Plant had a Bud and quickly left, I'm sure after having satisfied some obscure contractual agreement. But don't quote me on that.) The Irish bouzouki entered late into Charlie's life, and like a thunderbolt it struck and illuminated him. We'll just say he was well lit when he first picked it up. With his extensive musical and performance experience the instrument proved not all that difficult for him to play. He soon migrated from traditional bouzouki leanings towards more exotic fare after becoming bored playing period English musings. His wife - already a marvelous percussionist in her own right - picked up the doumbek soon after. And thus, FALIK was born. "KimTaylor's voice reflects everything that's good about the angels." -Jake Speed, singer-songwriter, 2001 Cincinnati Entertainment Award Winner for best Folk/Bluegrass artist. Reviews on the old mp3.com website had this to say about Art Sonic’s music The soundscape is visually very appealing. I can just imagine the sun shining through the tall trees falling upon the large tropical leaves. This music is quite dynamic with plenty of contrasts starting off quietly and then introducing drums and impetus. There has been a lot of work done in the background with the mixing. A very enjoyable listen indeed. "Niall James Holohan has a voice like good wine ..it's clear and rich ..solid without being too weighty ..his lyrics are full of wry images and clever motifs ..the wit is more Wildean than acerbic but it's astute and funny and probably the most accessible of the collective" GRAINNE FALLER IRIS MAGAZINE SEP 03 Eden Automatic defines the new dark alternative by spiraling in and around silky vocals adding erotic texture to an eerie soundscape. Layered in part by guitarist Doug Conlon, bassist Greg Terhune, and drummer Scott Miles while lead singer Annette Conlon provides additional guitar. A four-piece rock band from Dallas, fronted by Annette Conlon, Eden Automatic delivers the instant pleasure promised by their name. Constant travel has built a regional fan base in Texas, Louisiana, Colorado, Oklahoma, and New Mexico - from small venues to fairs and festivals - Eden Automatic has forged a new genre. Not limited to live performances, Eden Automatic was selected as the feature band for the internationally televised TV Show “Net Talk Live?. In the Movies... Eden Automatic has had several songs placed in many movies over the years: I'll Love You To Death (Not Your Familiar) Suburban Nightmare (2004 - EI) Don't Wake Becky (Not Your Familiar) - Suburban Nightmare (2004 - EI) (Music Video) Need (Glimmer) - American Nightmare (2002) Laughing (EPED) - A Rat's Tale (2000 - Warner Brothers) This Weeks Top Ten Highly Recommended (can be found by clicking on ‘top ten’ on www.nextbigthing.co.za) 1 Orca Desire – Ydna Murd (Germany) 2 Fallen – Aidy (featuring Sharon Baggs) (UK) 3 Undress – Eden Automatic (USA) 4 Perfect Day – Quaint (Finland) 5 Tandoori – Marimbira (USA/Africa) 6 Besame Mucho - Mariette Bodier (Holland) 7 One Dimension – Novacaine (South Africa) 8 Armony – Niall James Holohan (UK) 9 Snapshot – Dream Aria (Canada) (NEW) 10 After The Rain – Art Sonic (Canada) |

Notes on just a few of the bands featured on the show Two of the bands featured on this weeks cast are part of the The Two Twiggs Xperiment (an effort to educate about and promote Break Beat to the public in the best way possible) First up is Caytie Marvelis who say about themselves, “Yes, ours is a divine mixture of funk, rock, reggae, hip hop and punk with a twist of lime. The base, the root, the soul of it all is beat. Savage, breaking, beat brothers. We have dedicated our minds, our bodies, our very existence to grabbing Africa and beyond and swinging them onto the dance floor. We cannot control this gift, it must take you, you and your sister, and teleport you into the world of perpetual groove.? Also part of the groove experiment is bRoTheRmAn who is working on many dance-floor breaking tracks. These include songs for the forth-coming Two Twiggs Xperiment compilation album – featuring South Africa's finest broken beat producers and musicians. Presently in the UK playing gigs and doing promotion work for TTE, returns to SA occasionally to keep in touch. Free Radicals From Texas say about themselves, “we are (usually) an instrumental horn band featuring unsmooth jazz, anarchist funk and old school ska we're into playing free shows, freeing our minds, free-jazz, freestyle rap and political freedom but we're not into the north american free trade agreement or the huge freeway that runs behind our houses. We have opened for (among others) Sun Ra Arkestra, Rebirth Brass Band and successfuly played a 24 hour concert for charity.? Outside The New are incredibly talented musicians, throwing themselves into a mixing pot and coming up with a sound so unique that they have taken even the most jaded of people and shocked them with their sheer musical genius. With a range of music genres from hip hop, rock, new breed, funk and jazz. Consisting of six distinctly radical individuals congregated by destiny with the identical musical iconoclastic vibes BAGGABOWNZ gives new meaning to the Freedom Of Expression amendment. With a powerful, visual, & hard-hitting live performance, Jo Day they continue to wow audiences at concerts, festivals & clubs. Their fanclub (the “5th member of the band?) has members as far afield as England, South Africa, Holland, the USA, Canada, Germany & Australia, & grows bigger by the day! Exploding onto the scene in 1999, Brassknuckle Boys redefined the term "Street Rock N' Roll", and are a continuing force to be reckoned with in the music scene today. Hailing from Lexington, KY these boys bring you what you've been waiting for...original, hard-hitting music from the streets, yet with lyrics that have a story to tell and leave you reevaluating your life. From start to finish, they'll leave you begging for more. Daniel Iorio is a veteran singer/songwriter from Montreal,Quebec, Canada. Sat, 16 April 2005 At NextBigThing www.nextbigthing.co.za we don't believe music should be sold like fast food. The reason is simple, fast food outlets make the act of eating mindless, tasteless and choiceless. Eating should be a pleasure, a social time, an opportunity to experience something different. The music industry (the record companies, distributors and radio stations) have the fast food approach. Don't think or explore, order by number and Super Size for an extra $1. They are there to process songs and artists like McDonalds processes cows. The aim of NextBigThing is to bring back an opportunity to listen to something different, interact and socialize, express an opinion and explore what you won't hear on the radio. Its Music Tourism. Come along with us as we dive into the worlds nightclubs and discover a vast mix of genres and talent. (Unfortunately you'll need an IE browser to join us on the website, otherwise enjoy the podcast with us. Cheers Martin, Martin and Dave) |

This latest show is jam packed with eclectic goodness. We speak to Joe Lokteff
From Piggyback Records about a few of the bands on the label and we are taken from power pop to punk to techno with the greatest of ease.
We also give Fishkill another listen to and hear two of their raw frantic songs.
And we then change speed totally and slip into the smooth class of Steely James
Letting him fly us out with dreamlike vocals.
It's the new year and a new mindset and a new bunch of artists and tunes.
Fourteen bands, wildly eclectic in the NBT tradition.
Tonight we dive deep into the jazz cool waters of Robin Stine and swim against The edgy flow of quirky stream of bubble and boil indie pop of the bands The Morrisons , The Psycho Daisies, and The Legendary Ten Seconds
So just for a change something different. Martin .de hosts the show totally on his own..
And So we arrive at Show Ten. A slightly surreal and laidback set in which Martin and Dave highlight ten of the best tunes featured on the previous podcasts.
After some hiccups, we are back and sailing ever forward. All the tracks on the show can be found on the www.nextbigthing.co.za website.
And so it's the three of them again. World wide madness, soundbites galore, the three, Martin.de , Martin.za and Dave (who is just Dave) discuss music, mullets, trends and of course the fine art of the perfect pop song.
This week is The Seduction of the Random in which Dave and Martin pick page numbers (We have 40 pages of Bands!) and come up with a mix that even Mr Eclectic himself (Martin Germany) could not imagine in his most wild dreams.
Another diversion from our usual format, in this show Martin plays us tracks from his 'favourites' on www.nextbigthing.co.za and we discover the guy is quite the big softie at times.
Here is show number 3, a little too much beer and some interesting music! Show notes to be updated by Martin (Germany) soon. We have included a picture of traveling that relates to the show.
